"Hiromi Miura excels in the the creation of space and depth,
drawing strength from line alone, whether in large abstract
compositions or in the ultra fine detail and simplicity of
flowers to the point of abstraction in ink on large "washi"
(heavy handmade Japanese paper) canvases that come alive with
erotic overtones. Working in ink on Japanese paper allows
little margin for error or corrections. Having studied under
both Kayama Matazo and Yokoyama Misao at Tama University of
Art (both of whom have had retrospectives at Tokyo's National
Museum of Modern Art), her work reflects the revitalization
of "nihonga" they represent and her own strong direction going
to the basics of the art of ink on paper and away from the
impressionist cliches of much current Japanese painting.
Her goal is an original and dramatic form of sumie (ink on
heavy paper) on a large scale -- non-traditional, but requiring
traditional skills and discipline. Many of the current paintings
focus on the microcosm of power and passion revealed in flower
forms at their most elemental."
